On May 14th,HUST-NUS Academic Lecture on “Community-based e-Health Program for Older Adults Living with Chronic Diseases” was held virtually over Tencent Meeting. Invited by the School of Nursing, Tongji Medical College(TJMC) of HUST, Wu Xi Vivien, an assistant professor from the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies (ALCNS), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore delivered a speech. The lecture was hosted by Dr. Wenning FU, a lecturer from the School of Nursing, TJMC of HUST. More than 50 participants joined online.
Assistant Professor Wu Xi Vivien presented her ongoing research project “Community-based e-Health Program (CeHP)” which aims to increase the health literacy and empower patients in self-management of chronic conditions. She explained that this research adopted a pilot study with two-group pre- and post-test repeated measure design and recruited community-dwelling older adults with chronic diseases aged 55 and above from senior activity centers in Singapore as participants.
She further illustrated a cell phone application that provides health education and health monitoring services for the elderly designed by her research team with pictures and a video. This application focuses on management of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and diabetes; brain health, healthy diet; lifestyle modification; medication adherence, exercise and mindfulness practice.
Assistant Professor Wu Xi Vivien pointed out that participants in the CeHP group demonstrated improvements in fasting glucose, HbA1c, total cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins, low-density lipoproteins, Self-care of Chronic Illness Inventory (SCCII) indices and Healthy Aging Instrument. She emphasized the use of electronic technology to help community-dwelling older adults with chronic diseases reduce debilitating complications of poorly controlled chronic diseases as well as promoting their healthy longevity and social support.
In the Q&A session, attendees discussed the development of medical applications and the confidentiality of patients' data during the research process with the speaker. This lecture broadened participants’ international perspectives, providing new insights for nurses and researchers.
Speaker Biography:
WU Xi Vivien is an Assistant Professor at Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS), a secondary member of the Healthy Longevity Translational Research Program at NUS. Her research interests focus on Chronic Disease Management for Older Adults and Caregivers; Intergenerational Programs to Promote Healthy Ageing in the Community; Professional Development of the Healthcare Workforce and Nursing Education. She has published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers in international referred SCI journals and book chapters. She had also served as editor for International Nursing and Medical Journals.
